So Darren Brown has this fantastic video where he sets up a butcher — a self-admitted unlucky butcher, at that — to run into several, unanticipated opportunities throughout his day. The question they were trying to answer was simple: was this man actually unlucky, or were his eyes just closed to the chances around him?

As you may have expected, all of these opportunities went right over his head. He brushes off a girl doing a survey, ignores the winning lotto ticket in the street, and simply does not observe when a few other incredibly lucky hijinks happen. You can watch it here, if you like.

It really makes me wonder…

What opportunities do we simply not notice?

I mean, the fact that I am typing this on a laptop with internet access means that I have access to 3.2 billion other people who might be waving a golden opportunity right in front of my face, if I only knew how to look for it.

What job opportunities might I find? What articles, what clients? It’s bigger than that, even. My sight is limited by my own tastes and proclivities, and there are plenty of other could-have-been-greats floating around out there in the cyber sea.

Let’s stay curious, open-eyed, and hopeful.

Opportunities are everywhere!

P.S. Upon reading the youtube comments for this Derren Brown video, I have learned that this butcher was killed when he was struck by two cars. Yeah, I know. Not one, but two. Sorry buddy, RIP. The cosmos has a brutal sense of humor sometimes. Sometimes you really can just be unlucky.

  1. Hello, Liv,

While I would say there are some legitimate golden opportunities on the internet, I would be skeptical only because of how much the internet is abused by so many only to further their own agendas. I wonder how many of those opportunities are genuine.

But it’s OK to search through all that. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what is genuine and what is not, so just be careful. Common sense and logic would usually prevail.

I think we’ve all missed out on some opportunities along the way. But for some reason at some point we must not have thought they were right for us. Things change, people change and so do opportunities. So I think it’s more important to focus on the ones we’ve chosen and make the best of them.

By the way, I think there are actually a very small number of people who are just unlucky. But most of the time what appears to be bad luck is the result of some bad choices that were made. We all make some of those, but what makes the difference is how we deal with it and how we recover from them.

    Have a great day,
